The movie “Lighter thanOrange” was made in 2015 and consists of a number of interviews of Vietnamese soldiers talking about their experiences during the “American War” and dealing with the effects of Agent Orange afterward. Or, we’ll watch another of our numerous movie choices, as decided by attendees. Potluck at 6:00, movie starts at 7:00.

At our first meeting of 2020, rescheduled to Sunday, January 5th, starting at 7:00 pm at the Alaska Peace Center office (shared with our associate Fairbanks Open Radio, KWRK-LP 90.9FM), 3535 College Rd, suite 203 above Fuji restaurant. We will be planning our parts in Earth Day 50 and in Point Hope – Alaska’s Youth Congress For the Global Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, possible films & presentations, our 8th Annual Peace Feast and more.

Alternatives to Violence Project – USA (AVP) workshops use the shared experience of both participants and facilitators to examine how injustice, prejudice, frustration and anger can lead to aggressive behavior and violence. We explore our innate power to respond in new and creative ways.
This beginning basic training will present conflict resolution skills through experiential learning exercises and practice with the goal of helping Direct Service providers and community members to think about and make choices to reduce conflicts in work and everyday settings. There will be 18 Contact Hours associated with this training.

Join us for a Friends Committee on National Legislation Introduction to Advocacy Workshop (FCNL). Come and learn strategic and effective advocacy tools to promote peace and justice, and be part of creating a local grassroots advocacy team in Fairbanks. At the workshop, you will also learn about the 2019 FCNL Advocacy Team campaign to repeal the 2001 and 2002 Authorizations for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) that have been used by three presidents to justify endless wars. This Introduction to Advocacy Workshop features FCNL Advocacy Teams Trainer Sarah Freeman-Woolpert. The workshop will run from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a potluck at 5:30. We’re in one of the center aisles near the east end, not far from the League of Women Voters. The Borealis Pavilion is the large blue building on the left as one enters through the Blue Gate at the east end of the Fairgrounds. The Fair is open from noon to 10 pm, Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 11.

Free famous barbeque! Please bring a dish to share and eating utensils if possible. This will be an opportunity to relax in the summer sun and share ideas and interests. We encourage those with a passion for peace to get involved at the personal level to make a difference in our own community. We’ll be featuring short presentations of work toward peace, justice, and sustainability being done in our community. The Square Dance Pavilion is between the Dance Hall and the the Pioneer Air Museum.

Peter Phillips is the former director of Project Censored, an organization exposing underreported news stories and highlighting the important links among a free press, media literacy, and democratic self-government. The APC office is upstairs from the Fuji Steakhouse in the College Mall building. Stairs are at the west end, sharing an external door with the steakhouse.
